Recycled Building Materials

The going green trend has been extended to numerous other areas. You probably have heard about environmentally friendly homes, but what about making a beautiful, original dwelling from recycled materials? Some people have thought of that and now we can admire an entire Buddhist temple made from glass bottles, a houseboat perched on land and, a resort lodging in a vintage airplane. These outstanding homes are both comfy and modern, and they support an environmental cause. In the following part you will be presented a few ingenious ways to recycle common materials, that some have used them to create spectacular homes.

Bottles

First on our list are bottles, particularly glass bottles. They are extremely harmful to the environment and even if it’s so easy to recycle them, we don’t do it. If the idea of returning them doesn’t appeal to you, then use the example of an absolutely stunning Buddhist temple in Thailand. It is made of one million bottles and is a testimony of how beautiful recycled materials can be. It is also a constant reminder of how large is the amount of waste we generate. Moreover, glass bottles can be used as a replacement of stained windows. They create a unique effect, when daylight passes through them.

Silos

A second recycled building material is silo. Grain silos are very easy to find in rural areas and can be transformed into unusual circular homes. Many people have already made use of this idea, and have created their own cheap, eco-friendly, personalized dwellings. It is very low-priced and facile, perfect to be converted into a welcoming home.

Cans

Let us not forget about cans. They can’t exactly be used to create a home, but they are perfect to decorate one. Just take the example of John Milkovish, who during his retirement didn’t turn to pastimes, and started adding “aluminum siding” to his home in order to improve its looks. He used cans because they’re both practical and decorative. Today his house is covered in more than 50.000 cans.
Shipping containers
Corroded and unappealing, shipping containers can be utilized to develop an inspirational, yet eco friendly home. There have been ways to turn plain boxes into incredibly beautiful homes, offices, and apartments. When you are using them to create a home, you have to regard them as giant Legos. They can take any form you want and fit in any position. Shipping containers are also relatively easy to transport.

Tires

Another environmental problem is related to overused tires, which usually are abandoned everywhere. Fortunately, there are many creative ways to use them and save the planet at the same time. When packed with rammed earth, tires can make very solid buildings that retain heat during harsh winters, and keep the building chill during the summer. Also, they are flexible and you have the possibility to give your tire-home any shape you like.

Airplanes

Last but not least, we have airplanes. You may think that they are not very comfortable as a home, but if you get rid of all the chairs inside they can be pretty roomy. However, it is hard to find a crushed airplane, in a relatively good condition to transform into home. Still, if you do, you can make it your home by following the example of the 727 Fuselage Home at the Costa Verde resort in Costa Rica. It is a two-bedroom suite that serves as a cozy crib perched atop a 50-foot pedestal.
