Standardization Sought for Home Trash Containers

Use Reduces Manpower Needs

Garbage collection tends to be a rather labor intensive industry requiring a lot of personnel to accomplish at relatively high cost. R4ecently many municipalities and other agencies involved in such collections have found a way to cut their labor costs by mandating the use of standardized containers for trash pickup. Typically, the containers will be supplied by the municipality. These will be large lidded containers made from molded plastic. A bar will be set above the hinge on the lid that will allow the home owner to steer the container about on the two wheels that run along the bottom.

These types of containers permit municipalities to operate one man garbage trucks. The driver also runs the hoist mechanism that grips the cans set out at curb side and lifts them up and flips them so the trash falls into the holding bay on the truck. Separate containers may be issued for leaves and other garden waste that will be picked up on special runs by collection vehicles that send the materials to processing centers that spread it onto large compost heaps where it is converted into a mulch for agricultural or garden use.

Systems of this sort eliminate the need for two or even three man garbage crews that needed both a driver and a person that rode standing along the back of the truck and had to pick up all the cans by hand. This position was very demanding physically and often produced injuries.

Durability and Looks a Consideration

Since municipalities seek standardization in order to save on costs, they must also be concerned about the price that they are paying for these items. Securr is a company that offers wide selection of merchandise for trash containment at reasonable prices. They also understand that aesthetics have a role to play in trash containment. Neighborhoods do not desire to have rusty or stained trash cans sitting out at the curb awaiting pick up by a garbage truck. That is why they have such a large selection of trash cans made of stainless steel and hard plastics that are easy to keep clean and free from unsightly stains.

Such containers must also be weather proof as they will most likely spend most or all of the time in an outdoor environment. In certain locations where homes are sited near or within National Forests or other places where wildlife proliferates, it may also be necessary to make the containers animal proof. This may require screw top lids with special apertures through which trash can easily flow, but which an animal may not reach through in order to remove the contents.

Many of these standardized receptacles will contain a city logo of some sort or some other design element meant to make them more attractive. It is also becoming increasingly common to place advertisements on them. The funds provided by selling such ad space help to underwrite the cost of collecting trash which explains the growing

Mosaic Art to Decorate Custom Trash Cans

New Avenue for Art on Trash Cans

Artists continually seek out new mediums to display their creative wares. For mosaic artist Ella Rhoades any space composed of exposed concrete is a potential space to show her skill in working with mosaics. A resident of Corvallis, Oregon, Rhoades noticed there was one place in particular that seemed to offer a great opportunity to mount such a display. That was on the surfaces of the 900 pound concrete enclosures that housed city trash cans. There were dozens of such contraptions scattered around town.

Her goal is to decorate 18 of them with mosaics. She has received the necessary approval to begin the project and is getting enthusiastic support from the community. For now, she is concentrating her efforts to enhance the receptacles along Third and Fourth Street. This will place her work in heavily trafficked locales where it will receive the largest audience by both pedestrians and drivers.

The Public Arts Selection Commission gave approval to the effort on July 26. The City Council is expected to follow suit. She first presented the proposal to the Arts Council on May 10. At a fund raising dinner for art projects on May 20, Rhoades reiterated the proposal and began receiving notices of approval from businesses and community leaders.

David Livingston is an enthusiastic supporter of the project. Livingston spent hundreds of hours designing the city’s trash receptacles. Nothing available through catalogues quite met the city’s specification so he used his engineering skills to come up with the design currently in use. He calls the mosaic plan, a “joyful, nifty thing” that will help to beautify the city.

Fits the Space

Rhoades had to come up with a design that would neatly fit within the 28 by 10 inch space that forms the blank concrete space along the sides of the receptacles and conforms to the arched top as well. An array of brightly colored pieces of glass will be set into a mesh. The piece will then be ready for installation.

Rhoades points out that the project is collaborative in nature. She intends to take the materials to various events so that others may join in on the project. Bowls of glass bits, glue, a pattern mold, and the mesh will be brought to construct the mosaics at these various sites. Children seem to especially enjoy pressing the glass bits down onto spots of glue.

At the May 20 fund raiser, Rhoades received a grant of $450 to initiate the project. Since then she has received an additional $300 from the Celebration of Youth Art fund along with $100 from the Corvallis Fall Festival and $60 in supplies from a New Jersey mosaic products distributor.

Rhoades estimates the costs at $250 per installation. This covers the $50 cost of supplies and $200 for labor. With 18 receptacles initially to decorate, that comes to $4,500 for the lot. Each glass piece must be hand cut with glass nippers from sheets of stained glass. Rhoades is seeking additional funds.

Safe Medical Waste Disposal Essential for Public Safety

Safety Must Come First

The proper disposal of medical wastes is a problem that relates to public safety. In particular, the safe disposal of needles and other sharp objects in this category of waste is needed to prevent injury and the spread of disease and infection. Waste workers must take care while working around such material in order to insure that they are not stuck with a needle. Such an event can lead to the transmission of a serious disease such as HIV or hepatitis.

Problems can also result when containers holding dangerous materials break open. Such contaminants may injure or sicken janitors, garbage truck drivers, and other workers who are involved in the elimination of such materials.

People who must inject themselves frequently for whatever reason are advised to take steps to insure that their discarded needles do not result in injury to others. They may take their discards to approved disposal sites. Doctors’ offices, medical clinics, and hospitals have these sort of officially sanctioned waste containers that can not be penetrated by needles or other sharp objects such as broken glass. Pharmacists and other health care professionals can advise people as to the locations of these sites. There is often no cost, or the fee will be nominal.

Several manufacturers offer devices that render needles harmless through melting or clipping. The Coalition for Safe Community Needle Disposal provides information on this subject at (800) 643-1643.

Bins Help Recycle Books and Clothing

Specific Bins for Specific Items

While collection bins have long been used for recycling efforts, they are now becoming more specific in the sort of items that they will accept. The all purpose bins of yesteryear necessitated the need to sort out the full range of items tossed in. This took manpower and made such efforts more costly. Recycling tends to be a labor intensive field to begin with, and the extra work

in the sorting out process often made the effort uneconomical.

Books and clothing are two items that have seen new storage units designed to hold them. The two products are so different in nature that they would naturally require different sorts of containers to hold them. In the general collection bins used in the past, they would simply be thrown in together. In such cases, both items could sustain damage. The books could tear the clothes. Heaps of fabric could leave books askew tearing pages and damaging bindings.

The goal is the same in all collection bins, no matter what sort of material it holds. The aim is to safely store the items until they can be collected. The items must be protected from the elements. Here rain is the big enemy of books while sunshine can be the bane of clothing. Colors can fade with exposure to sun. Exposed to the elements, clothing ages quickly while books may be ruined by a single short period of rain.

Security Always a Concern

Container bins must store their contents securely. They must be designed in such a fashion that leaves them safe from vandalism as well as from animals. At the same time, they must provide ease of access so that patrons that use them do not have to struggle to place items inside. This requires the use of lids that permit contents to be easily dropped in, but prevent materials from being pulled out again.

Steel is generally used for these bins. The higher quality bins will have the steel electrically treated to resist rust and corrosion. Rust will stain both books and clothes making them unfit or at the very least less desirable for use. The sturdy nature of steel means that people will have a hard time breaking into them to remove or damage the contents providing a locking system is used which they almost in all cases employ. Shrouded locking mechanisms ensure that only the key holder will be capable of emptying the bin.

Collections bins now come with loading drawers. Users will pull a handle that exposes a shelf space, but not the interior of the bin itself. Donated items are placed into this shelf space. When the handle is used to return the drawer to its closed position, the content in the shelf are dropped inside the bin. It is becoming increasingly common for bins of this sort to contain a collection cart that can be pulled out for ease of unloading the bin.

Trash Finds Its Way into Art and Fashion

Fashion World Employs Discards

The high prices attached to items of high fashion are not necessarily related to the costs of the materials used.  Rather it is a reflection of the cost of design work done by the best minds in the field.  This can be seen in the latest trend in the world of fashion; that is the use of discarded materials to create new clothes.  In a word, trash is being used to produce high concept clothing.  The use of such lowly materials allows designers to demonstrate their creative skills.  It takes much imagination to transform trash into beautiful clothing.

Many designers are also environmentally conscious and using recycled materials appeals to their desire to conserve resources.  To feature work of this sort, fashion designers staged a “Recycle Now Week” that promoted the use of trash in haute-couture.  Featured were dresses composed of cans, packing material, and newspaper.  Gorgeous gowns were assembled from the basest of materials.  Appreciative viewers found much to admire.

The French artist Bernard Pras created a portrait of Louis XIV in 3D using nothing but garbage.  A close up view of the work will reveal cans of soda, bags of chips, and toilet paper smoothly blended into an arresting portrait.  The artist explained that he wanted to show people that trash cab be made to look beautiful in the right combination.  Only talent is required to do this since the materials themselves are free.

Jewelry and Toys Work as Well

Trash is finding its way into jewelry as well where innovative designers are displaying highly imaginative work.  The divide between notions that jewelry is a high priced item while trash is freely available helps make the finished products a study in contrasts.  Jewelry of this sort falls into the field of eco-fashion where the aim is to tax earth resources as minimally as possible.

An amazing assortment of materials is used in this effort: copper, rubber, and metal alloys to name but a few.  British artist Ann Ellis uses recycled plastic, textiles, and other materials she found discarded to create marvelous pieces of jewelry.  She has won numerous awards for designing glamorous pieces that no one would guess literally came out of the trash.

Traditional toys have lately fallen out of fashion.  Children today seldom play with cars or even with robots.  They are more likely to spend their time playing video games.  Bucking this trend is designer Jay Garrison who has created a series of whimsical toys constructed from things he just happened to come across.  He calls the line his “Found Object Assemblage.”  Toy cars and other mechanical devices are built from parts taken from things he picked up at thrift shops and craft shows.  His declared aim is to bring back the sense of joy children used to get from playing with actual toys.

History of Garbage Collection from 1700 to Modern Times

The new age of waste disposal began with the turn of the century in 1700, and it brought with it a number of different ideas which ranges from the saving of the feces of dogs to setting up massive plants for burning down waste. Every other person came up with a plan to save the cities from the rapidly developing waste management problem, or to earn a few quick bucks for themselves. During that time, the main material used was coal, as it could burn stuff faster than any other material. Just in London, over 3.5 million tons of waste was burnt.

By 1908, things had changed rapidly, and people would just dump their waste in any location that they found to be convenient. These included wetlands, the ocean or any waste land along their path. In around 161 U.S cities, a setup of waste collection was established, and ‘piggeries’ were introduced, which were small pig farms that would consume the major food waste from the area. By 1914, incinerators had been introduced after lots of trial and error, and so were landfills. Covered body trucks were introduced to help keep the smell of the waste within the truck.

In the year 1934, the Supreme Court took a major step and banned the dumping of municipal waste in to the open ocean. Up to this point, dumping waste in to oceans was very common practice. After this however, the World War 2 began and the whole nation began to recycle paper and rubber, scrap metal as well as tin cans. By the time 1945 came, over a hundred cities within the USA was making use of sanitary landfills for waste disposal.

In the year 1956, the Clean Air Act was passed in Britain, and the USA soon followed suit, and household heat was majorly replaced with electricity and gas. The National Association of Waste Disposal Contractors was formed in order to begin the private hauling of wastage. In 1965, the Solid Waste Disposal Act was put forth, which authorized research in to site inventory, landfill research as well as various methods of safe waste disposal.

In order to help cities manage more waste, the idea of a transfer station was also developed during this period. These are large warehouses which pack waste in order to be moved from one place to another. After the dangers associated with hazardous waste were introduced, significant effort was put in to waste disposal technology. The EPA introduced new standards in 1991 for landfill groundwater research, as well as post closure care of waste disposal sites.

During this time period, different waste disposal trucks were introduced in order to help with the collection of disposal of waste. These include commercial rear load trucks, construction roll off trucks as well as residential garbage dump trucks. Some of the trucks have built in incinerators in order to quickly dispose off of waste. At present, these modern garbage collection trucks are in common use.

Locking Features Needed in Waste Bins

Waste Materials Gaining Value

Recycling programs are growing in popularity. Almost every community of any size will have some sort of recycling program underway. While people often donate the materials to these centers, it is becoming increasingly common to offer cash payments for materials that are brought in. The prices that are paid can make it worthwhile to collect cans, bottles, and other materials for reuse. This has become a reliable if still small source of income for homeless people. They can be seen picking through dumpsters for cans, bottles, and other materials that can be exchanged for cash.

More professional types in this field will often concentrate on the recycling of metals that bring a higher price. Copper in particular will command prices of more than a dollar a pound. This has led to wire stripping in many homes that have been abandoned due to the recent spate of foreclosures. People have also come to realize there is much valuable material within the recycling bins themselves. The collection of the materials has already been done. All one needs to do is remove them and take them to another collection center.

For this reason, it is important that such collection bins contain a locking system that prevents theft of this sort. Such a system will insure that the material remains where it belongs. These containers are often found in large parking lots where they are left unguarded through the night. It can provide an

attractive target for thieves who simply drive up and begin emptying the contents. Even if a police car does happen to drive by and see the theft, it can be hard for the officer to determine whether contents are being removed or put in. Locks are the only real deterrent for this.

Limits Liability as well

A proper locking system will reduce the risk of liability should anyone be injured in connection with using the waste bin. Securr Trash Cans is a company that understands the needs for such systems. Securr carries a wide range of both trash cans and recycling bins. Securr offers a number of these sorts of bins that make use of locking systems. They even offer ones that are animal proof for use in areas with wildlife. This can be of particular importance in areas where there are bears or raccoons. Both of these animals are adept at breaking into trash receptacles where they know and can smell that food waste is present.

Securr features containers in many sizes and colors. They seek to fill all the niches there are in the area of waste containment. All of their products are durable and competitively priced. They are actively engaged in the field of recycling. That is why they have taken the lead in developing locking systems for recycling bins. They realize that keeping such materials properly in place until they can be sent to a reprocessing center is the key to making recycling programs a success. If thefts rise, people could sour on the effort.

How Recycling Can Save Your Business Money

Cashing in on Green

Recognition is growing throughout the business world that there are substantial economic benefits to initiating an eco friendly model for making the company work.  Most firms have already implemented programs to lower the amount of energy they use.  In addition to pressure from a variety of environmental and community groups coupled with government at several levels, the impetus for this came from the savings that result from using less fuel and electricity especially when these items spiked upwards in price.

Recycling has similar savings potential.  Plastics, paper, and metal can now all easily be recycled.  There are redemption centers in every neighborhood that purchase such products in small scale amounts.  This means that even small businesses can set up a few bins in the lunch room and reap the profits on a regular basis.  If there are substantial amounts of materials being generated, it is possible to arrange pick ups by waste management firms that deal in such trade.

Programs such as this have very low start up costs.  The cost is largely confined to buying a few containers and finding the best place to put them in.  It also helps to communicate to workers about the program and how they should use it.  Instruction should also be provided to any after work cleaning service used.  These people may otherwise throw away an inordinate amount of recyclables left in individual trash cans set beside each desk.  These are likely filled with cans, plastic containers, and paper, all of which may be recycled.

High Level of Recyclables

Most companies today simply toss out the waste material they produce.  The costs of doing this can be substantial.  Garbage collection costs are viewed as a necessary cost of doing business.  There is a cost to the community as well.  Garbage collection impedes traffic and places many large slow moving trucks out on the street.  It is also becoming increasingly difficult to find new sites for landfills and garbage dumps.  Municipalities desperately wanted to keep their current sites in operation for as long as possible.  Recycling will help save space in these places giving them a longer life for use.

It has been estimated that 70% of the trash companies produce consists of materials suitable for recycling.  By cutting down on this amount, companies will have less need for garbage collection.  They may be able to schedule less frequent pick up or have other sorts of cut backs that result in lower fees for waste removal.

A growing benefit to recycling efforts lies in the area of public relations.  A company that is renowned for having a green sort of orientation can gain a substantial market share.  There is no corresponding benefit in being seen as against such efforts.  Companies are learning to promote the notion that they are working to achieve a cleaner environment.  Instituting a recycling program is one way to do this.  Since a program of this sort can often pay for itself or even turn a profit, it becomes a sensible thing to do.
